Professor Mushtaq Hasan

The global family of Dowites is greatly saddened at the recent demise of one of its giant patriarch who contributed immensely in enhancing the glow of thousands of its shining stars scattered all over the world.
Professor Mushtaq Hasan earned his MBBS from King Edward Medical College in 1942, followed by MD from Punjab University in 1947. He joined Dow Medical College in July 1948 as lecturer in Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He earned his MRCP from Edinburgh in 1953 and was later awarded FRCP. Dr. Hasan was subsequently promoted to Professor of Medicine and transferred to Nishter Medical College in 1956. He also served as Professor of Medicine at Liaqat Medical College and Fatima Jinnah Medical College, before returning to Dow in 1963. Professor Hasan served as the Head of the Department of Medicine at Dow for several years before his retirement in 1979. He continued to actively practice medicine till the age of 86 years.
Professor Hasan was a role model for his professionalism and a conscientious style of teaching and practicing medicine. He was known for teaching intellectual honesty. Professor Hasan mentored and inspired a generation of physicians in Pakistan. Many of his former students have and still serve in various academic leadership positions in Pakistan and around the world, and have made major contributions in the field of medicine.
During his illustrious career, among his numerous other contributions, Professor Hasan served as Honorary Surgeon Commodore of Pakistan Navy, Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Fellow International College of Angiology, member editorial board of Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, and the founding member of Pakistan Cardiac Society and Pakistan Medical Association. In recognition of his services, Professor Hasan was appointed as Governor of the American College of Chest Physicians for Pakistan. He was one of the founding fellows of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. Professor Hasan had the distinct honor of drawing and examining the blood of the founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, in 1947.
Both of Professor Hasan’s children are practicing physicians in the United States.
